What Happens in FHSD Over the Summer?

This summer FHSD has a record 3,750 students participating in 14 different summer school programs in 16 different buildings, but that’s not all! In addition to the 375 staff members running the summer programs, other District employees are preparing for the 2019-20 school year. “It’s a common misconception that our District is closed during the summer months,” said FHSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris. “But in reality, it is a busy time for many of our staff, even those who are not at school year-round. We never stop working to ensure that our students receive a top-notch education during the school year.”

Training, preparation, and maintenance are all underway to ensure that staff and schools are ready for the return of students in August. This includes:

● Implementing in-house transportation services by onboarding approximately 240 new employees
● Taking delivery of 191 busses
● Renovations to the Bus Annex and Bus Garage
●Transitioning to the new alternative learning building by preparing classrooms, conducting needed maintenance, moving items between buildings, changing locks, and incorporation into the FHSD network
● Participating in multiple job fairs to recruit new applicants
● Filling 91 open positions
● Planning five days of orientation for new teachers members
● Preparing for 64 strands of professional learning with 79 facilitators
●Engaging over 80 administrators in 20 hours of training, reflecting, and strategic planning
● Certifying all administrators in the use of the Teacher Evaluation Tool
● Planning and scheduling principal evaluation cycles and process for the upcoming school year
● Training non-certified staff in the 4E safety program
● Implementing 117 mobile carts and 3,259 Chromebooks in elementary and middle schools
● Reporting required state data on all teacher and administrator evaluations
● Planning and scheduling 11 monthly academic meetings with building principals for the upcoming school year
● Creating new School Improvement Plans based on current students’ needs
● Making headway in all goal areas of the Strategic Plan
●Expanding of the Senior PALS program to include an event during the summer months
● Planning for the employee Kickoff event in August
● Wrapping up the 2019 Fiscal Year budget
● Beginning the budget process for the 2020 Fiscal Year
● Preparing for the annual budget audit
● Updating and replacing a variety of school amenities, including FHC track and field updates, FHHS track and field updates, replacing the gym roof and updating the playground at Daniel Boone, remodeling the office at Hollenbeck, tuckpointing at Barnwell, classroom addition at Fairmount, districtwide playground mulching, and asphalt overlay at John Weldon
● Maintaining HVAC systems, districtwide backflow testing, water meter changes

Approximately 20 percent of District employees work a 12-month schedule to make sure that everything is ready to go during the school year. As one school year ends in FHSD, another one is already beginning!
