Music Production and Technology at Saeger

The world is coming of age in technology. Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is becoming the platform where students practice and learn technology skills that will not only prepare them for careers and college, but will make them stronger, critical thinkers and problem solvers.  At Saeger Middle School, Music Production and Technology teacher Patrick Keller is raising the bar when it comes to bridging tech and education. Keller’s class blends music technology, strategy, and creativity to foster purposeful and meaningful work among his students. With projects ranging from podcasting, voice editing, and audio arrangement, the curriculum is geared to provide as much insight to a side of technology for the media.

“In technology, there are many different avenues you can choose,” said Keller. “I’m a nerd for music  tech and podcasts, and because I have that passion, I’m able to share it with the students I teach.”

The students have wrapped up a project where they manipulated old cartoons by stripping the audio from the video clips, and creating new sounds to fit certain sections in those videos. For example, one student took an episode of “Popeye,” where he removed the current audio from the clip and added his own effects, music, and sound transitions.

“Along with coding, I think that this is something really great to teach at such a young age,” said seventh grader Brennan Jones.

With the rise of computer programming, coding, and all things digital, recruiters and companies are exhibiting an increasing demand for tech-savy people to not do just great work, but also create innovative, forward-thinking change within the digital space. FHSD is ensuring education in as many areas in technology to prepare students to fill that gap.
