Gifted Programs

Spectra

Gifted education at the middle school level seeks to enhance student abilities and provide a foundation for future learning. In order to serve the diverse needs of the students, the resource room is available to students on a regularly scheduled basis. Students may also utilize the resource room at a time arranged with the Gifted Education facilitators.

The aim of the program is to provide participants with an opportunity to develop skills and accept a high degree of responsibility for their own learning. Students have opportunity to develop and participate in learning activities based on their interests, knowledge, and abilities.

To encourage higher level thinking, independent units of study incorporate analysis, synthesis, and evaluation skills. The following units of study are illustrative of activities available to gifted students: creative writing, poetry, archeology, astronomy, aviation, botany, anthropology, electronics, photography, law, statistics, the stock market, foreign languages, interior design, cartography, ecology, genealogy, publications, art using different media, literature, and advanced mathematics.

SEGA

The aim of the SEGA (Students with Exceptional Gifted Abilities) program is to provide a challenging and rigorous curriculum with academic acceleration for the exceptionally gifted learner who displays a high degree of self-motivation in grades 2 through 8.   The Francis Howell School District recognizes that these students require an academic curriculum, educational experiences and attention to affective needs above and beyond that of the regular gifted education program.  Participation in the SEGA program allows students to achieve at a level commensurate with their abilities and interests while integrating within an appropriate peer group.  The elementary SEGA students are homogeneously grouped together for the entire core curriculum.
